Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Yellowstone season 5 part B, episode 9, "Desire Is All You Need"!Kayce and Monica's lives have become immensely more complicated in Yellowstone season 5 part B. Part A of the final season of Taylor Sheridan's hit show saw the youngest Dutton son and his wife rocked by tragedy when, while driving herself and Tate to the hospital amid contractions, Monica was involved in a car accident, resulting in the death of their baby. The rest of the first half of the season watched as they grieved their loss, with everyone from Kevin Costner's John Dutton to Kelly Reilly's Beth and Gil Birmingham's Chief Rainwater offering impactful emotional support.

With John busy at the Governor's office and Rip having taken a large portion of the cowboys down to Texas to watch over the livestock sent there after part of the land becomes contaminated, Kayce is left in charge of the Dutton ranch. After plenty of theories considered the possibility, the Yellowstone season 5 part B premiere confirmed that John was dead, having been killed by the hitmen hired by Sarah Atwood at Jamie's request and made to look like a suicide. As Kayce becomes the executor of the ranch, he finds himself properly pulled into his siblings' war.

Alongside Costner, Birmingham and Reilly, the Yellowstone season 5 part B cast includes the returns of Wes Bentley as Jamie, Kelly Reilly as Beth, Luke Grimes as Kayce, Kelsey Asbille as Monica, Cole Hauser as Rip, Brecken Merrill as Tate, Jefferson White, Ryan Bingham, Wendy Moniz, Forrie J. Smith and Dawn Oliveri. Kicking off the final episodes with a bang, Sheridan is keeping audiences on their toes building toward the series finale.
Prior to the show's return, Screen Rant interviewed Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille to discuss Yellowstone season 5 part B, the "Earth-shattering event" that serves as the catalyst for the character arcs going into the rest of the season, how Monica feels about Kayce taking over the ranch from his father, whether that will impact his relationship with Rip, and Chief Rainwater's ongoing involvement in their lives.
"All Bets Are Off" For The Dutton Family Going Into Part B
"...everyone has to go into sort of action mode."

Screen Rant: I am so thrilled to chat with you both for these final episodes, even though I have not seen them, because everything is very under wraps right now. Luke, I actually would love to start with you. As we saw near the end of the first half, Kayce is really becoming a bigger part of the ranch after John has left to focus on his Governor work. I'd love to hear not only what that bigger role will entail for him, but especially since it's coming in the middle of this heated war between Jamie and Beth.
Luke Grimes: Yeah, I think it's kind of been teed up for a while, "Can Kayce run the ranch?" That's sort of been the question, if he would be the logical one to hand it over to. But, we haven't really seen the qualities yet to see if he could do that. And I think it's kind of looking like we might see what he's capable of. I will say that in the very first episode, a very Earth-shattering event happens, and all bets are off, and any sort of plans anyone had are over, and everyone has to go into sort of action mode.

Monica Is "Ride Or Die" With Kayce Amid His Family Drama
"...Monica loves Kayce completely."
Kelsey, I'll turn to you next. Obviously, Kayce and Monica have been dealing with quite the emotional turmoil the first half of this season, processing what happened. The ranch has always been something that has scared Monica, in a sense, especially when Kayce gets further drawn into it. How do you think Monica feels about Kayce essentially having to step up and take over the ranch?
Kelsey Asbille: I think Monica loves Kayce completely. This is such a big season for him, so I think she trusts him in that way. Also, at the end of 5A, it's kind of coming around. John and Monica are speaking about, "Well, how can we make this work?" So, yeah, she's in it, ride or die. She'll make it work.

Rip & Kayce Would Be A "Pretty Bada-- Team" If They Got Along
"...these guys have not really liked each other for a while."
Luke, I'll turn back to you. Obviously, another thing with Kayce running the ranch is that Rip has often sort of had his own opinion on who should run the ranch. I'd love to hear if that tension will be felt going into these final episodes between the two.
Luke Grimes: Yeah, clearly these guys have not really liked each other for a while. They fight like brothers, but like, Yellowstone brothers, which is a little bit worse than how most brothers fight, right? [Chuckles] It's so tough, because there's not much we can really say about what you can look forward to any of that. But I will say, I think at some point it becomes bigger than their squabbles, and becomes bigger than the ranch and the family. It becomes something that everyone sort of has to come together, rather than be at odds.

That's what I like to hear, because I've certainly loved when the Duttons actually come together in peace versus war with each other.
Luke Grimes: Yeah, I mean, Rip and Kayce would be a pretty bada-- team if they just work together, right?
Rainwater's Involvement Is "A Big Part Of The Dutton Legacy"
"...[they imagine] an unlimited future for Native people..."
Kelsey, I'll turn back to you. Another thing I've loved seeing from both of your storylines is Chief Rainwater's bigger involvement in your family, helping get back to your Native roots, but also to really mourn the loss of your son. The trailer for the final episodes seems to show Kayce and Rainwater getting a lot closer. I'd love to hear if we can expect the same from Monica in the final episodes.

Kelsey Asbille: I think a big part of the Dutton legacy does imagine, like Monica and Rainwater, an unlimited future for Native people and future generations. So, yeah, without giving too much away, I think it's a really important part of the Dutton legacy. It's hard to do this. I'm just like, "Ahhh!" I'm sweating over here. [Laughs]
